Okay, I am going to have to forgo the video for now, my computer has changed since the last time I did a trade video (that is how long it has been and how much we have enjoyed the boat. Also what a slacker I am about doing these trades) and I can't figure out how to get it together. I am just going to go with the pictures for now. Golden Paperclip Trade #7 went down in El Dorado Springs, MO and the trade was the boat for a classic car- 1954 Oldsmobile Super 88 Rocket! Pretty excited to have the car- need to clean it up a bit but Bob the trader put a bunch of parts in the trunk so I can put some of it together myself. Bob was a cool guy and thanks to my brother Lyall for driving down to El Dorado Springs with me and helping me get the car back. A good time and a good trade. Bob even had me sign the boat! Trade #7- Boat for Classic Car: 1954 Oldsmobile Super 88 Rocket!

Bob "Mr. Bojangles" was the cool guy I traded with. He even had me sign the boat before I left!

We hauled off the Super Rocket and headed back to Kansas City. My brother was driving a little too fast- 90 mph and the headlight cover flew off! Unfortunately we never found it. Everything else on the trade went off without a hitch though.

Goodbye Boat- I had a lot of fun with the ski boat, great times with the family. She is in a better place now though (with chickens!).

Bear with me, I am trying to upload Golden Paperclip Trade #7. I have realized something after doing the whole Golden Paperclip Project. #1- I am ridiculously slow at this kind of stuff- trading, deciding, getting around to returning emails, updating the website, getting videos uploaded, etc. Not the top of my priority level. I am more into riding around in canoes and boats. This is what I say every day- "Nah, I will update that later." And I also learned #2- I could never be a blogger! Have been getting quite a few trade offers for the boat, seems like at least half are four wheelers. I would have taken four wheelers a step or two ago but I feel like this would be a step back. However, I did get one for a quadzilla, the fastest four wheeler ever mass produced. Nice! They go over 70mph. That would probably get me killed. It would definitely require a trip in for Xrays. Boat is back in top shape and ready to be traded. I took her out on Blue Springs Lake and she purrs like a kitten- plus the best part- I figured out how to work the seats so they recline all the way out. Put the seat down, throw in the anchor, and have an amazing nap on the water! Thats what I did. Get your trade offers in now for the boat- 1989 Wellcraft 17 foot ski boat with 115hp motor. Thoughts and Prayers for Joplin

Wanted to let everyone know that I am back into the trading but first things first, I want everyone to know that Joplin is in our thoughts and prayers. My wife and I went down there to help out and wow, the city needs a lot of help. If you can spend a day or two helping out like we did, get down there and do some good. Here are a couple pictures we took but mostly we just went down to lend a hand. The American Red Cross is doing some good work down there and so is Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, which is who we went with. If you want to donate financially Google those two great organizations.

Okay so a few people have asked me about the Golden Paperclip project and I will just remind everyone that I have a boat and since I live in the middle of America where it is very, very cold boats are practically worthless right now. But soon it will be warm and a boat will be priceless! As a student (and instructor) of Economics, I know that the value of a boat will be higher then. I am the world's biggest slacker. Or maybe I am procrastinating because I don't want to trade the boat. My wife says procrastination is the fear of death. Maybe. Maybe we all want to do something big before we die, something noble, something grand, something like throwing a book or a shoe at the president. Well not everyone can do that in their life (or get past security). So maybe I am procrastinating. I have had so many good times with the family, I hate to let the boat go. But I really need to. I finally got some good photos and I used the $400 I got out of that Blazer that blew up to get two new seats, so the boat is looking good. I put some photos up and made some barter posts so now I am back into the trading game. Well I was. The only thing I can share is the intensive Brazilian dance instructions that took up my days and nights. My parents sent me to Brazil for this intensive training at an early age so that I could become the best dancer possible. Here is a video from that training of me as a boy:

I wanted to trade the boat for this sweet ride, a Cadillac Eldorado from 1978 with Vince in Springfield. This allegedly has the longest doors ever put on a passenger car with large scale production. I went down there this weekend with my wife and had a great trip but unfortunately the Cadillac would not have passed inspection, it had a couple of things that needed a little work and I don't want to put any work into anything. So I had to walk away. Vince could not have been nicer about it, he was a really cool guy and said he understood. It wasn't anything either of us did wrong I don't think, because the boat is not perfect either, I just don't want to get into having a car that needs some work and I am afraid that is what the future would hold if I made this trade. So I walked away from Goldenpaperclip #7 and I will keep the boat for another day. (Or more- no hurry, its lots of fun).

I am hard at work sifting through the trade offers. Let me know what you think, so far I have an abandoned house in Kansas City, a Ducati motorcycle, a trip for two to Brazil plus a scooter, a trip for two to Hawaii, a day with Denise Richards (allegedly- hopefully not the same one that strung me along with a day with Neil Diamond!), and my new favorite, a 1978 classic Cadillac. If this thing had switches, I would automatically say yes. How good would that look bouncing up and down at the stoplight! Here is the best part- it has shocks in the bumpers. The owner told me that if you hit something doing less than 20mph, it just bounces off. I might need that to park since it is 18 feet long. Watch out parkers of Kansas City!

Trip for Two to Hawaii?

Trade seven offers are rolling in. What should I trade for the boat? Here is a good one, a trip for two to Hawaii, to stay for a week in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort. I like the sound of that! I have also had trade offers for an RV with lot rental, a 33 foot cargo trailer (with air conditioning), a heating and cooling system from Trane and a 1972 Triumph motorcycle. All great trade offers.

Alright, I guess I have to do it! I have been having a great time with the boat, Hillsdale Lake, Smithville Lake, Longview Lake (many times) but it is time to put the boat up for trade. Probably better strategy to trade it before the whole summer is gone. The family wants me to stop trading at the boat but I still have a way to go. Miles to go before I sleep, miles to go before I sleep. Robert Frost, I said that poem with my pants unzipped in freshman English class. Welcome back horrible memories! Fire, Water, and the Olathe Police (Again)

Bad News, the Blazer blew up! Literally. I was taking the Blazer for a ride with my buddy Shawn and after dropping him off he said, "This floor is really hot, check it out, smoke!" So I said, yeah, this old beast runs hot. Then I took off and got just over the railroad tracks and it caught on fire, three foot of fire. The fire department came, the Olathe police, it was chaos. So I was in trouble again with the Olathe Police (see go kart post for last time- apparently they don't allow go karts on College Boulevard in Olathe) and they were not too happy this vehicle was not registered in my name. I had to explain my trading at least eight times but they let me go without handcuffs! So now the Blazer has blown up. I guess that was to be expected, she was pretty old and decrepit. So I would like to trade the Blazer for upholstery work on the boat, anyone want to trade that? Don't worry, the boat is fine, she is a sweet water slicing 17' machine and the trade was still a good one but the Blazer is no more.

Light at the End of the Tunnel/New Radio Interview

Finally, a light at the end of the tunnel! Pretty sure I am getting out from under the apartment lease soon so that will be good, I have been stuck for awhile but I ran into Mark from the American Exchange Network. You should know that Mark used to be the chauffeur for Wilt Chamberlain so he has some great stories. He does all kind of trading: merchandise, vehicles, even Super Bowl tickets. There are some professional traders there, I had no idea. I even traded some concert tickets for hotels stays. Help! I am stuck!

So I am second guessing myself on the apartment lease. It seemed like a good deal at the time and the face value says $7,000 but no one that needs a place to stay has anything good to offer! I think I should have thought about my target audience a little more. I have worked with a couple organizations like the Livestrong Foundation which would like to put up those in need with cancer in the apartment while they are in KC for treatmet and COPP Care of Poor People that would like to put a family in need in the apartment to get them off the street. The problem is that neither has been able to come up with an afternoon with a celebrity, which would be really cool. So the offers of the truck and the van stand but they are older vehicles, I was looking for something crazy on this trade to make a big splash. I guess it is not easy, or else everybody would try this. If anyone knows a celebrity (come on Neil Diamond!) to spend an afternoon with or a someone that needs an apartment for a year that has something good to trade, let me know because right now I am absolutely stuck. Tattoo This Man and Woman!

I received one of my most unique offers this weekend from Alex, who says we can tattoo his shoulder and his wife's belly. A real tattoo! Well, on Alex at least, I think the pregnant belly tattoo would have to be a temporary one or airbrush or something. I don't know, I am no doctor but I am excited about the possibility of tattooing something on someone's shoulder. What would I say if I got to pick out what someone else had permanently tattooed on their body for the rest of their life? On me, that would be a scary proposition but on others it sounds pretty fun. What about this tattoo: "Jason Friedline, Half Man, Half Amazing!" It would be a lousy tattoo on me but on someone else it just says, "This guy knows how to have a good time." Which would also be a cool tattoo. Maybe this one, "Tattoos are chic magnets. Feel the force" But then Alex already has a woman. Maybe a protest tattoo: "Down with Vegetarians! Plants have feelings too" that would be cool. The possibilities are endless with a tattoo on someone else's body. I am not sure how it would help me trade up so if you can think of something, let me know.

New Years Resolution: Get Back on the Project!

Okay, Okay I have been slacking the last month. No trade for a month, I know! I was trying to do a deal with a local dealership where they would get me a new Honda and the apartment would be donated to a family in need but that fell through. Plus there was the holidays, okay I am ready to go! And just in time, a newspaper article came out about me this weekend in the Examiner, which is a great paper. Today I realized a lifelong goal when I saw myself on the Johnny Depp fan club site! After extensively googling myself, there it was on page seven, like a shiny glowing treasure, the words Jason Friedline and Johnny Depp fan club, together! Yes the lifelong dream has been fulfilled, something I have wanted ever since I saw the movie Edward Scissorhands as a young boy. Which is of course the real life story of a young man's emotional battle with scissors as fingers. As you know, I requested paperclips from many celebrities but only received one from Donald Trump. But what you may not know is that I did receive an autographed picture from one Mr. Johnny Depp. The picture said, "Why would you want my paperclip when you could have this lifelike dreamy picture of me circa 1985 from 21 Jump Street!" or "Good Wishes, Johnny Depp" One of those two. The picture was mentioned in my news story in the Olathe News http://www.theolathenews.com/101/story/286142.html and the Kansas City Star article http://www.kansascity.com/news/neighborhood/olathe/story/911516-p2.html and that news wire was picked up by none other than the Johnny Depp Fan Club. Computer Trade Brings Lots of Automobile Offers

Week one of the computers is drawing to a close and I have to say that computers are really, really boring! First there was the canoe which I took out two weekends in a row and then the mini-chopper which I drove so much I had to take in to the shop to get fixed and then the go kart which I drove around the high school track at record speed and then nearly got arrested by Olathe's finest. All good times! The stinkin computers are just setting on my shelf. Boring. So I need to trade these pretty quick and thats good because I have lots of good trade offers. The Cadillac Coup de Ville is probably my favorite so far, mostly because in the picture the driver is wearing a helmet and the tires are smoking. I also have offers for an RV, a diamond bracelet, a minivan, a Nissan Altima, a scooter, massage for a year from Midwest Massage, and the record for the creepiest offer: A burial plot for two at Mount Hope Cemetary in Lawrence, KS. While it would be cool to be buried next to the world's largest granite Bible, it would not be cool to be buried in Chickenhawk country so I think that would dramatically cut down my trade options. Goodbye Go Kart! Trade #4 Is Official

Trade #4 Went down on Friday, November 7th at noon. The go kart will be missed, that is for sure. But after my recent run in with the police and the stern midnight warning against ever driving on the streets again, I figured it was time to trade off the kart. The go kart went to Brian S. in Lee's Summit. Brian traded me dueling computers- a laptop and a desktop all with top of the line software, a keyboard, a flat screen monitor, the works! So now dueling computers are on the clock. I know, computers are boring but it is time to get practical and stop playing around and I think this will help me trade up to the SUV. I was inspired this week after meeting with a crazy guy named Todd who is known as the "One Lucky Penny Guy" He found a lucky penny on the ground and told his wife so and put it on eBay. He has received a lot of press and he hopes to trade up until he can accomplish one of his life goals, meet Jay Leno. He has successfully traded up to a Winnebago which he hopes to drive across the country while collecting people's dreams and goals in his dream book. It is a great story and one thing he said at our meeting at Panera got me thinking, "What did you want to do with your life before kids and mortgages and work and all of life's stuff." Well I wanted to be a professional baseball player but besides that, I had lots of other dreams and goals. I have started to compile mine the last week and it has been fun. I am using a site called 43things.com and it allows you to work on your life goals. Some of mine are not going to be that hard (write to my grandma once a month, give 10 $10 bills to strangers this Christmas) some are going to be somewhat hard (move out of the suburbs, own my own boat) and some are going to be nearly impossible (write a one hit wonder, publish my own novel). Here are some pictures of my new sweet Yerf Dog Go Kart. It takes me back to my Branson, Missouri days on vacations as a kid (doesn't every Kansas City kid go to Branson Missouri for vacations?) My favorite part was the go kart racing around the wooden tracks on "The Strip" in Branson. My brother ran into me a lot though so I had to hone my Dale Earnhardt skills early. Well now I have my own go kart! How do you like me now!!!!

Almost Decision Time

We are down to the final few days of the first module of the Golden Paperclip Experiment. I have received lots of good offers that range from the weird (Chinese Stars, Throwing Knives), to the unique (picnic in the park, unicycle) to the just plain wrong (live Shih Tzu dog with crazy eyes). Lots of trade offers over the last few days for Donald Trump's paperclip. I have the useful (fax machine/printer/copier all in one machine), the unique (unicycle) and the weird (picnic in the park with no food, just champagne and orange juice). I love picnics as much as the next guy but I think there should be chicken involved. Robert says he does not eat or serve anything with feelings. Don't plants have feelings? I learned about some sites that do bartering (www.barterzap.com). Apparently there is a whole community of barterers out there. Okay, site is done! I am ready to start trading. Special thanks to my coworker Jeff for helping me with the html stuff but a lot of it I did by myself. I was pretty impressed with myself. The Beginning of the Golden Paperclip

Today is day one of the blog! I start my expriment tomorrow, August 15th. I am excited. I got a paperclip from Donald Trump (finally) and now I am going to trade it up until I get a five pasenger vehicle. My game plan is to do a trade on the 1st and 15th of every month.
