I made the Johnny Depp Fan Club News!

Today I realized a lifelong goal when I saw myself on the Johnny Depp fan club site! After extensively googling myself, there it was on page seven, like a shiny glowing treasure, the words Jason Friedline and Johnny Depp fan club, together! Yes the lifelong dream has been fulfilled, something I have wanted ever since I saw the movie Edward Scissorhands as a young boy. Which is of course the real life story of a young man's emotional battle with scissors as fingers. As you know, I requested paperclips from many celebrities but only received one from Donald Trump. But what you may not know is that I did receive an autographed picture from one Mr. Johnny Depp. The picture said, "Why would you want my paperclip when you could have this lifelike dreamy picture of me circa 1985 from 21 Jump Street!" or "Good Wishes, Johnny Depp" One of those two. The picture was mentioned in my news story in the Olathe News http://www.theolathenews.com/101/story/286142.html and the Kansas City Star article http://www.kansascity.com/news/neighborhood/olathe/story/911516-p2.html and that news wire was picked up by none other than the Johnny Depp Fan Club. Here is the link from the fan pop site whose subtitle is, "How could you not love Johnny Depp." That is what I am saying!

Trade #5 is Official: Computers for One Year's Rent!

Trading with Tina Jackson, Manager of the Appletree Apartments. Two computers for one year's rent in a two bedroom apartment!

The Most Valuable Gift Certificate I have ever owned, one year's rent!

This could be your new home (free rent all year!) Imagine going all 2009 without having to pay your mortgage or rent payment! How nice will your life be? Now what will you trade me?

A monster trade went down today, November 19th. I had lots of good trade offers this time but I am going with this trade: the computers for one year's rent! This is a 2BR apartment for a year at Appletree Apartments on 72nd Street. It is just 15 minutes from downtown and it has a balcony, two bedrooms, a bathroom, new carpet, and an updated kitchen. I will try to upload video of the trade with manager Tina Jackson from Appletree later tonight or tomorrow. Let me know what you think about the trade by clicking on comment.

Monster Trade Today at Noon!

A "Monster Trade" goes down today at 12pm central standard time. What will be Golden Paperclip Trade #5? The computers are gone, found out what they went for this afternoon.

Computer Trade Brings Lots of Automobile Offers

Week one of the computers is drawing to a close and I have to say that computers are really, really boring! First there was the canoe which I took out two weekends in a row and then the mini-chopper which I drove so much I had to take in to the shop to get fixed and then the go kart which I drove around the high school track at record speed and then nearly got arrested by Olathe's finest. All good times! The stinkin computers are just setting on my shelf. Boring. So I need to trade these pretty quick and thats good because I have lots of good trade offers. The Cadillac Coup de Ville is probably my favorite so far, mostly because in the picture the driver is wearing a helmet and the tires are smoking. I also have offers for an RV, a diamond bracelet, a minivan, a Nissan Altima, a scooter, massage for a year from Midwest Massage, and the record for the creepiest offer: A burial plot for two at Mount Hope Cemetary in Lawrence, KS. While it would be cool to be buried next to the world's largest granite Bible, it would not be cool to be buried in Chickenhawk country so I think that would dramatically cut down my trade options. I put pictures of all my trade offers on the site goldenpaperclip.com so let me know what you think.

Goodbye Go Kart! Trade #4 Is Official

Trade #4 Went down on Friday, November 7th at noon. The go kart will be missed, that is for sure. But after my recent run in with the police and the stern midnight warning against ever driving on the streets again, I figured it was time to trade off the kart. The go kart went to Brian S. in Lee's Summit. Brian traded me dueling computers- a laptop and a desktop all with top of the line software, a keyboard, a flat screen monitor, the works! So now dueling computers are on the clock. I know, computers are boring but it is time to get practical and stop playing around and I think this will help me trade up to the SUV. Reply under the post and let me know what you think of the trade and email jason@goldenpaperclip.com if you have any good trade offers for the dueling computers.

What are your Dreams?

I was inspired this week after meeting with a crazy guy named Todd who is known as the "One Lucky Penny Guy" He found a lucky penny on the ground and told his wife so and put it on eBay. He has received a lot of press and he hopes to trade up until he can accomplish one of his life goals, meet Jay Leno. He has successfully traded up to a Winnebago which he hopes to drive across the country while collecting people's dreams and goals in his dream book. Check out his website http://www.theoneluckypennyguy.com/ or google lucky penny guy. It is a great story and one thing he said at our meeting at Panera got me thinking, "What did you want to do with your life before kids and mortgages and work and all of life's stuff." Well I wanted to be a professional baseball player but besides that, I had lots of other dreams and goals. I have started to compile mine the last week and it has been fun. I am using a site called 43things.com and it allows you to work on your life goals. Some of mine are not going to be that hard (write to my grandma once a month, give 10 $10 bills to strangers this Christmas) some are going to be somewhat hard (move out of the suburbs, own my own boat) and some are going to be nearly impossible (write a one hit wonder, publish my own novel). Check out my goal page at http://www.43things.com/person/Goldenpaperclip and tell me what your dreams and goals are!

Some Pics of My New Sweet Ride

Here are some pictures of my new sweet Yerf Dog Go Kart. It takes me back to my Branson, Missouri days on vacations as a kid (doesn't every Kansas City kid go to Branson Missouri for vacations?) My favorite part was the go kart racing around the wooden tracks on "The Strip" in Branson. My brother ran into me a lot though so I had to hone my Dale Earnhardt skills early. Well now I have my own go kart! How do you like me now!!!!

Making the News

I have been getting some news coverage for the Golden Paperclip lately. Here is the article from the "Tuesday Report" with Barter News:  http://www.barternews.com/archive/09_09_08.htm I was also interviewed on Mix 93.3 in Kansas City. But the best moment in news coverage is that there is an article written about my quest entirely in Spanish! How cool is that? Here is the link: http://blog.acambiode.com/2008/09/cambio-un-clip-de-oro.html

Last Chance for the Canoe!

Last Chance for the Canoe!

Two more days and she is going to be history (the canoe, not my wife). This is your last chance to make me a great offer for the canoe before the weekend. I have received some great offers so far: a cow, a mountain bike, professional photography for a wedding, land in Alaska, a brokedown Ford Bronco, and who can forget the 5 foot boa constrictor. Click below on comment and let me know what I should choose or send your last second trade offer to jason@goldenpaperclip.com.

This could be you!

This could be you, heading down the river on my sweet 18 foot canoe. The canoe has been a good time but she has to go. Send your all your unique trade offers to jason@goldenpaperclip.com. If yours is accepted, you will be headed down the river in no time. Since I have had so much fun with the canoe, I may stick with fun things for my trades. I am looking for a moonwalk or something motorized. I had a 5foot boa constrictor and a cow offered to me today so that is interesting. Let me know what you have or click on the comment button under this to tell me what you think I should accept as a trade.

Its Official: Golden Paperclip Traded for Canoe

At 9am today, Saturday August 30th, 2008, the first trade took place in the golden paperclip experiment. It is official, Donald Trump's Golden Paperclip goes to Doug in Columbia. In exchange, Doug trades his family's giant 16foot skinny canoe! One golden paperclip for one canoe. Its official. Doug saw my ad on Craigslist and said he must have the paperclip to give to his friend as a gift. Apparently his friend is a big Donald Trump fan and he was looking for a unique, one of a kind gift to give him. Well this is one of a kind alright! That means item #2 is now on the clock. I will trade the canoe in September so get your offers in now to jason@goldenpaperclip.com or you can text them to 816-918-7118. I am working my way up to an SUV and am well on my way thanks to Doug. Be sure to comment below to let me know what you think about the trade and what I should try to get next. I am off to canoe the rivers of Missouri!

Almost Decision Time

We are down to the final few days of the first module of the Golden Paperclip Experiment. I have received lots of good offers that range from the weird (Chinese Stars, Throwing Knives), to the unique (picnic in the park, unicycle) to the just plain wrong (live Shih Tzu dog with crazy eyes). I will make my decision this weekend so click on the comment button below to tell me what I should choose.

Trade offers are pouring in!

Lots of trade offers over the last few days for Donald Trump's paperclip. I have the useful (fax machine/printer/copier all in one machine), the unique (unicycle) and the weird (picnic in the park with no food, just champagne and orange juice). I love picnics as much as the next guy but I think there should be chicken involved. Robert says he does not eat or serve anything with feelings. Don't plants have feelings? I learned about some sites that do bartering (www.barterzap.com). Apparently there is a whole community of barterers out there. The guy who is offering this unicycle traded a Saturday Night Fever record for it straight up. Nice! Keep the trade offers coming and post your comments to this post below.

Let the trading begin!

Okay, site is done! I am ready to start trading. Special thanks to my coworker Jeff for helping me with the html stuff but a lot of it I did by myself. I was pretty impressed with myself. The website even has a goat page! (With Sounds!) Email your trades people jason@goldenpaperclip.com. You can click on the comment button after this to tell me what you think about the site. I think I will post another picture of the paperclip goat on here just so you can see him.

The Beginning of the Golden Paperclip

Today is day one of the blog! I start my expriment tomorrow, August 15th. I am excited. I got a paperclip from Donald Trump (finally) and now I am going to trade it up until I get a five pasenger vehicle. My game plan is to do a trade on the 1st and 15th of every month. Should be fun, if I can just figure out this website stuff. This HTML is a whole new level of dorkiness. If anyone has a trade they want to make email jason@goldenpaperclip.com
